Infection Control and Disease Prevention in Dentistry

Although rare, documented cases of infectious agent transfer among patients and dental care providers have occurred in clinical settings since publication of Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings in 2003. The recent worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has proven to all health care professionals the necessity of observing guidelines promoted for infection control and disease prevention and maintaining a facilities program within the clinical practice that addresses the safety of both patients and personnel.

Evidence-based research on the topic of infectious agents from agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has helped to continually develop modern practices for control and prevention that are now taught as part of dental school curriculums. Advances have come about due to improvements in:

• Identification of modes of transmission (airborne, fluidborne, bloodborne, etc.) for different disease-causing pathogens

• Evaluation of the risk of transmission and cross-contamination of infectious agents in various clinical settings

• Refinement of work-practice controls, such as handwashing, PPE use, sterilization and disinfection of patient-care items and environmental surfaces, and the disposal of nonhazardous and biohazardous waste

• Engineering controls, such as the use of personal barriers and disposable or retractable equipment that reduce the risk of transmitting infectious agents

• Technology for gene sequencing that leads to the quick development of novel vaccines that protect healthcare providers and patients when exposed to infectious agents

This course will discuss the basics of disease transmission and common infectious pathogens along with traditional methods of prevention and promotes the development and evaluation of a consistent program of infection control measures in the dental and dental lab practice with continual education and training for dental health care personnel (DHCP).
