Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

A Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is a pathology of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) or its associated muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Disorders can comprise more than one disease state that truly affects relationships of the temporomandibular joint structures with the teeth, head, spine, brain, and the autonomic nervous system. Symptoms of TMD may not develop into severe pain; but, pain is the chief reason for a person to seek relief. About 7% of women and 3.5% of men have reported episodes of jaw/joint pain within a six month period. TMD can also be identified in children and can affect up to two-thirds of adolescents and children.
