Nervous System: Spinal Cord Procedures

The Nervous System subsection in the Surgery section of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set lists procedures anatomically. Codes (62263-63746) are used to report various procedures of the spine and spinal cord. This course provides an overview of these diagnostic and therapeutic spinal procedures, including injection, drainage, and aspiration procedures; catheter, reservoir, and pump implantation; spinal neurostimulators; and stereotactic spinal radiosurgery. (Note that spine procedures such as arthrodesis, discectomy, laminectomy, facetectomy, arthroplasty, spinal instrumentation, and bone grafts classified in the Spine/Vertebral Column subsection (22010-22899) are covered in a dedicated course in the Musculoskeletal System course.)

This course also introduces the learner to the format, guidelines, and common modifiers pertaining to these nervous system surgical procedure codes in CPT. The course will focus on identifying the appropriate code for spinal cord procedures using case studies and scenarios. A current copy of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®), Professional Edition is strongly recommended to optimize your understanding of the content covered.
