Musculoskeletal System: Spinal Procedures

This course covers coding procedures on the spine using the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®). CPT codes for spinal procedures are found in the Musculoskeletal System and Nervous System Surgery subsections, and in the Category III section. This course covers spinal procedures classified in the Spine (Vertebral Column) subsection (22010-22899) such as arthroplasty, arthrodesis, vertebral procedures (laminectomy, discectomy, and corpectomy), spinal instrumentation and bone grafts. (Spinal cord procedures such as injections, drainage, neurostimulators, pump implantation, and stereotactic spinal radiosurgery are covered in the Nervous System course.)

Coding these spinal procedures using the CPT code set requires knowledge of the vertebral column anatomy, spinal procedure techniques, and the CPT coding guidelines and instructions. A current copy of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®), Professional Edition, is strongly recommended to optimize your understanding of the content covered.
