Interventions for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

About half of people in the U.S. experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], n.d.). Approximately 6.8% of those individuals will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). PTSD can result from a range of events that compromise a person’s sense of safety. Symptoms are intrusive and persistent, significantly impacting people’s lives. Nevertheless, many people with PTSD remain unidentified and go without adequate help. Nurses may be the first professionals to recognize the symptoms and to help victims seek therapy that will allow their wounds to heal.

The goal of this course is to provide information to nursing professionals in acute settings to recognize and address symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.
