In Session: Applying Ethical Decision-Making

A code of ethics cannot address every dilemma behavioral health professionals face. It serves as a guide rather than a set of rules, outlining common situations of public concern. Ethical dilemmas arise when professional duties and values conflict, requiring careful judgment about which should take priority (Knopes & Guidry-Grimes, 2024; Reamer, 2018). While codes may offer clear direction at times, real-world practice often involves “gray areas” where multiple ethical standards or interests compete, and no perfect solution exists. By interacting with this individual in a simulated therapy session, you will see how your selection of responses impacts the ethical dilemma that is presented. Supervisory input will also help guide you through this simulation exercise.
