Cardiovascular System: Cardiac Valve Procedures

Degenerative, ischemic, rheumatic, and infectious (endocarditis) processes are responsible for valve disease in adults. Valve repair and replacement are surgical options to treat cardiac valve dysfunction of all etiologies. Valve repair is often used for cardiac valves that have become floppy and leak, while valve replacement is used to replace a damaged valve with a new valve. The most common types of replacement valves are mechanical valves or tissue (human or animal) valves.

This course will focus on coding cardiac valve procedures using the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set. It will review the codes for valve repair and the coding guidelines and instructions in the Cardiovascular System subsection within the Surgery section of CPT. The purpose of this course is to help the learner identify the appropriate CPT code for cardiac valve procedures (33361-33478) and correctly apply the coding guidelines using case studies and scenarios. A current copy of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®), Professional Edition is strongly recommended to optimize your understanding of the content covered.
