Anatomy and Physiology: Digestive System

Though not the most glamorous of the body systems, what the digestive system lacks in charisma, it makes up for in performance. The organs of the digestive system, also referred to as the alimentary canal, and gastrointestinal tract, work together to break down and process everything we eat and drink. Additionally, a significant portion of the immune system is in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, commonly called the gut.

In this course, we will discuss the anatomy of the primary and accessory organs of the digestive system. We will follow the path of the GI tract to see how each organ participates in the process of turning food into fuel. We will discuss the physiological process of digestion, the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food. We will also briefly touch on how the GI tract and the immune system are related.
